Can passport be taken back from the consulate ???

Hi all,

I have a small clarification. I am planning for H1B visa stamping in Feb 2011 in Canada.

Say that the consulate has taken the passport and the case is under 221g/administrative processing. Meanwhile if there is an urgent situation which needs me in India; can I go to the consulate and collect the ONLY the passport?
