Please advice on my problem with surname in passport

I am H4 Visa holder. I have a long surname and in my passport it is handwritten(when my passport was issued 9 yrs back). When I went to India and walked into passport office for re-issue of passport. Since now the passport system is computerized, officer said the system cannot accommodate my full surname. My surname will is short of 4 characters.

I am worried because if my surname is short of 4 characters on the new passport, it will be different from the old passport and I797.

I would greatly appreciate your advice on how to handle this. What is required to be done in this situation.
