L2 to F1, back to L2

Hi,

I am currently in L2 visa (child), and a full-time student. I would like to change from L-2 to F-1 to get SSN. Approximately how many days would it take to get a F-1? Also, should I travel to a border post to get the change of status to F-1?

After a month or two, will I be able to change back to L-2 status (it is valid till 2013). If so, how can I change back from F-1 to L-2? Will I be needed to go out and re-enter US?

Is there any risk involved in these changes?

Thanks in advance.

A person in L-2 status may generally file Form I-539 to apply for a change of status to F-1. Processing time is currently ranging from 2.5 months to 4 months in most cases, depending upon where you must file the application.

A foreign national has the option of traveling outside the U.S. to apply for the F-1 visa, which may be a quicker process. However, it also may be unnecessary, depending upon the person's circumstances.

For a more detailed response to your specific situation, please consult with an experienced attorney.
