H1b renewal stamp in Canada/Mexico, I94 expired

Hi

My H1b renewal application is still in initial review.

My H1b expired on aug 27, I94 has valid till date of sep 10, 2011.

If/when my renewal gets approved,

Can I get the visa stamp at canada/mexico? or do i have to go to my home country?

I read that if you overstay the validity of the i94, you shouldnt get a stamp at canada-mexico.

Just wanna make sure I didn't misunderstand it
