H4 to H1-B Issues

I am working on H1-B visa valid until 2014. I got laid off recently but will be on payroll till July 31, 2011. I am looking for jobs to get my H1-B transferred.

But I am exploring this possibility wherein if nothing clicks, I might have to apply for COS to H4 since my wife is on H1-B. Seeking your advice on below scenario. Please advice.

1. If I need to apply for H4, will it be difficult to come back on H1-B from H4?

2. Or is it better to have H1-B transferred to any employer for time being till I find the kind of job am looking for.

Any suggestion would really be helpful as I do not have much time.
