Mom passed away - emergency travel with expired Green card

Can you pls let me know if any of you have suggestions .
My wife’s mother passed away a  few hours ago and she would like to travel to India immediately. But her Green Card has expired as well as her i797 extension for 24 months expired few months ago. I read online that it’s not advisable to travel to India in this situation as it could lead to denial of green card and entry back to US. We have called USCIS and they have told we will get a callback within 72 hours for an ADIT/I-551 emergency stamping appointment but my wife is inconsolable as she’ll wont be able to be in India before the funeral services. Do you have any suggestions on my situation? Are you aware of anyone that has received temporary work/travel ADIT stamping at a US Consulate in India? Are there any risks with traveling to India on an expired Greencard and I-797 Notice? Will it jeopardize re-entry back into the US? Look forward to hearing from you for any help.
