Unpaid research internship during OPT

Hi,

I worked as an unpaid research assistant intern for a professor in my university. I did report it to SEVIS on time. However, the position didn't go through the department HR so I'm worried about if it's official to satisfy the employment requirement of OPT. I can get a confirmation letter from the professor to state my experience and duties during the unpaid internship. I'm wondering is the letter enough, or will I have any problem when I apply for future immigration benefits?

Without a formal approval from HR this may cause a lot of problems.
