CBP gets USCIS I-94 info

When I had last entered the USA (in Nov 2014) I was issued an electronic I-94. Since then my H4 extension of stay was approved and I was issued the paper I-94 along with my H4 I797A approval notice

Does the details of the I-94 issued by USCIS in the I-797A approval notice get passed on to the US Custom and Border Protection (CBP) through internal communication between USCIS and CBP. Or is it that CBP gets the information of I-94 in the I-797A document (issued by USCIS) only when the person returns the paper I-94 (that is there in the I-797A notice) when leaving the USA.

The concern I have and hence the above question is, that I missed to return the paper I-94 (that is there in my I-797A notice) at the airport while flying from the USA.
