EAD Expired , OPT extension under process, travelling to usa

Hello

 

One of my friend had an emergency situation and had to go to india during the period of OPT extension under process. My friend has been working remotely from india, has a full time job for more than 3 months. Can my friend plan to travel back to USA, with an expired EAD? If not, may I know what process is the best way in this situation.
