I131 - Outside the country with my spouse. How long can I stay?

 Hello all,

I have a GC and petitioned for my spouse. She is currently in India while her I-130 is procesing. I applied for a I-131 travel document, got approved and am with her in India.

As I understand, an approved I-131 allows me to be outside US for up to 2 years of time (without trips every 6 months) but still allow me to maintain my GC status. (I would still need to have the minmum residence requirements for renewal or for applying for a passport, but I am ideally not going to be challenged for having spend over 6 months outside U.S.)

Can someone please tell me if my understanding is correct? Are there other risk factors with being outside for extended periods of time?

I do two jobs - one remotely in the U.S as part time and another in India for a U.S. based organization. I have an address in US, credit cards, bank accounts etc during this time.

Your best bet is to cover your bases by discussing this with the firm of Murthy or any of your choice. Of course a reentry permit lets you return.
