Visit India while H1 Extension is applied

I have my current H1-B valid till 7-Sep-15, same is the date on I-94. My employer would apply for an extension by next month. So while the extension is in process, could I travel back to India on a personal trip during the month of Jul/Aug. Kindly suggest..

Apply for extension after coming back. You can travel while your extension is in process, but why to extend before when you have an option to apply after coming back.
