Un paid leave during H4 EAD extension

Hi, I have applied H4 EAD extension for my wife, along with my H1 ext and H4 extension.. I got an RFE and we are working on answering the RFE.... my wife H4 EAD status ends this Sept 30th... so was checking to see if there are any options open like being on unpaid vacation till the H4 EAD card is received instead of  resigning the job.. she checked with the company HR but they are not sure if they can hold an employee in this scenario .. so they in turn asked to check with attorney if this can be worked out... till H4 EAD card is received...
