How long can I delay H1B stamping at consulate?

Hello,

 

My H1B was selected in the lottery this year. My employer has filed under 'consular notification' and to the best of my knowledge, I will need to leave the country, get a new stamp in order to activate my H1B. 

 

I am currently on J1 Academic Training so I do not have an immediate need to activate my H1B this October. Is there a way to delay the activation of my H1B? If so, for how long?
