Working during H4 EAD Renewal (extension) waiting period

My wife's H4 EAD is going to expire on 5/28/2017 and she is currently working. We have filed for H1, H4 and H4-EAD extension in regular processing. Going by the trend it would take 8-9 months for H1B approval decision, so H4-EAD extension decision will only happen after H1B decision. It seems that H4-EAD rules changed with the rule introduced on 01/17/2017. Can my wife work on H4-EAD after the expiration date (5/27/2017) while waiting for the H4-EAD extension decision? please clarify
