I-94 Date and Passport Stamp date different - Visitor visa

Hello,

My father-in-law left US in March 2017 and came back again on May 2017. The immigration officer questioned him why he is returning so soon and asked him to leave in 3 months. So, he stamped the Passport with "Until" date 8/31/2017. When i checked the I-94 online, the "Admitted Until" date shows as 11/4/2017 which is full 6 months.

Question: Am i supposed to change the I-94 date to be in sync with the Passport Stamp date? If not, then, what date should we consider, passport or I-94??

I'd greatly appreciate your comments.

It is better to leave with in 3months as stated by VO and stay for 6+months outside of US and then return, VO might have inserted some comments, probably too frequent traveller etc and might raise flags during next visit.
