Period of Stay without any Employer

Consider a non-immigrant was suddenly fired from a company and person's I797 and I94 is valid for another year.

1. Whether person is eligible to stay in US? 

2. If so, how long the person can stay without an Employer?

There is NO grace period. On H1, you always have to be employed and getting paid.

If you get laid off, you either need to change to some other status immediately, or leave the country. The company has to pay for your flight back to your home country, by law.
