Forum heroes JoeF, Rahul412, Jarichi whats ur opinion on OPT STEM 6years proposal, come on gusa gusa..

We want ur VALUABLE (as always) opinions yaarrr..

Instead of addressing your query to specific persons kindly post it as a general one. This a forum where there is a lot of discussion and everyone tries to give their inputs.

As livliv responded it is just a proposal. It is too early to speculate anything on that. Plan your life according to existing rules and regulations. If a new rule comes into existence that might be advantageous to you then take it.

Instead of 6 years opt STEM, the US government should consider removing per country limit on visa numbers... that solves lot of problems.  Keep a control total, and remove per country limit.

That would require a law change. This OPT stuff would just be an executive order.

With the current climate in Congress, no immigration law change will happen.

Please, before you post suggestions, make sure they can possibly be done. Thank you.

Immigration in the USA is a big gamble with different rules, EOs, and laws.  Who would knew 15 years back that H4-EAD will be a reality?? now, here we are with h4-EAD after so many people went through agony, frustration and sorrow...  Similar to H4-EAD which took so many years... after many more waste years.. law changes.. not soon...but some years later.

I don't think anytime soon any more new EOs will be signed by the current government...  6 years of OPT STEM (students out of colleges) is almost equalent to 6 years cap with H1B (new grads+working professionals).  Similar to CPT, OPT has a purpose for students.. it is not for working professionals.

I am not against OPT, however, why do students need 6 years of OPT??  I can see only one reason,,, if their H1B is not picked in lottery then they can continue on OPT until next year...and again next year.  Instead of that, why can't government increase H1B visas back to 195,000 which use to be in 2000-2004!!!!

I had only 1 year of OPT when I graduated... now they extended to 27 months I think that a lot of time in OPT.

Again, an increase of the H1 quota requires a law change. Only Congress can change laws. And the current Congress is rather dysfunctional, in particular about anything immigration-related.

Please, people, educate yourself about these things...
