My I-94 expired 100 days back - I have valid H1 b visa and stamping till September 2016

My I-94 expired in March 2015. I come to know that I need to leave country asap and come back to get a new I-94 at POE. 

 

1) Has anyone travel to cancun mexico and come back to get new i-94?

 

2) Which option is better to traval to San Diego or Cancun??
