He had changed from employer a to b but didn't update the i20 accordindly. They had requested to provide documents for valid f1 status during the time of the h1b filing. Also they had mentioned that the current i20 refers to employer a.what are my options currently? Any help or suggestions is highly appreciatable.

You need to get updated I20 and submit it. Contact your school DSO.

You or your friend has to show that a valid status is maintained at the time of filing H1B petition. I believe there is an attorney involved in the H1B process. Talk to that attorney.
