H4 approved but question about visa expiry date

Recently my wife h4 is approved for 6 months even though my h1 is valid until 2016 and i have valid h1 stamping until 2016.

Just wanted to know if it is common?

Will I be able to extend the h4 validity in US?

Should I also need to take the return ticket when traveling to US?

Please let me know if anyone have any information regarding this.

The H4 visa was possibly stamped in error. Did you enquire? In any case the H4 validity is and will be based on your H1 petition which she shows on arrival and which will give her an I94 till 2016. No return ticket necessary. Are you in valid H1 status with stubs etc.?

No issue here. Once she reaches US have a look at I94 expiry date. Before I94 expiry file a extension of H4 status using I-539 application and supporting documents.

I did not enquire about it. I want to do the enquiry after she is in the USA because we already made the travel plans. I am in valid H1 status with valid pay stubs. I will be traveling with her. 

 

Interesting thing is that in the stamping the H1 validity period is given correct.

the visa is an entry document. The I94 on entry controls stay.

As Pontevecchio mentioned it is better to inquire at US consulate.
