In my 5th year of H1B, should my employer file for labour before I complete my 5th year to get H1B extension after 6yrs?

I am in my 5th year of H1B, My 6th year will start on 2014 October.

My question is: If my employer applies for my labour before the end of 5th year, will that be ok to extend my H1B later on after 6yrs? Or should my labour be approved by end of 5yrs?

PERM pending 365 days or I-140 pending 365 days means possible one year extension's of H1 beyond the initial 6 years. Approved I-140 means possible 3 year extensions of the H1 beyond the initial total of 6 years. PERM/LABOR approved means nothing to H1 extensions.
