SSN needs to be surrendered or cancelled before leaving US permanently

An Social Security Number (SSN) is assigned to you permanently and continues to be valid even if you are not in the U.S.  You should keep your Social Security records (number, card) as permanent documents.  You never know when you may need it again.

For example, I applied for and received my SSN when I was 13, when living in the U.S. with my parents with a green card, and needed it for high school.  (At that time a SSN was only required when you had a job, or in my case by the school system.)  When I came to the U.S. to work a few years ago I provided that SSN (I still had, and have, my original SS card), and was able to be put onto payroll, etc. immediately without any delays.
