achin12 Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 Hi everyone, I am having a very tough time today. On the way to mail my OPT extension application a squirrel fell from a tree to my windshield. I got spooked and scratched my car heavily over a fire hydrant. There's no property damage but my car got scratched pretty badly I don't have enough money to pay to fix the scratch. My insurance company said if I file a claim they'll pay for most of it but it affects my driving record, which is clean. And it's just before I mailed my OPT extension application. I wonder if I file a claim for my car fix wouldn't it affect my chance of getting the OPT extension approved? Am I considered violating any law that the USCIS will use against me? I was really driving carefully and slowly. I never thought a squirrel fell on me. Thanks everyone :(

I don't think they will report this to USCIS.
livliv Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 You have not violated any law, there is absolutely no effect on OPT. Secondly, the driving record that insurance company is talking about is their own internal driving record, which they use to determine your premium. So they will pay for the expenses minus your deductible (which you will have to pay) and then in future they will raise your premium. This happens to many people and there is no big deal.
achin12 Posted November 4, 2013 Author Report Posted November 4, 2013 Thank you very much for the clarification everyone. Because it was such a long scratch the insurance company has to pay more than 2000 to fix my car thus on the DMV website it's considered "major at-fault accident". The name of it freaked me out and I was under the impression that I had trouble with the law about this. Thanks again
