How soon can i apply for H1B 1 yr extension due to pending PERM

My PERM is being audited. My H1B is expiring in March 2014 (including recapture), however, i can get 1 yr extension of H1B based on pending PERM. My question is how sooner can i apply for the 1 yr extension. I am asking this because I am visiting India this Dec and need to get stamping done. If I can apply for the 1 yr extension right now and get approval, I can get the H1B stamped till March 2015 instead of March 2014.

I think you can apply 6 months prior to the requested start date.  So, if your March 31, 2014, is your expiration date, then your requested start date is April 1, 2014, and you could apply any time starting October 1, 2013.
