sansoe79 Posted October 21, 2013 Report Posted October 21, 2013 Hi, I have my wife H4 visa interview scheduled in December 2013. She is writing her GRE next month and and hopefully she will be getting her admission for Spring 2014 classes starting in Jan 2014 probably by December ending. I spoke to the advisor of the university and he assured me of giving admission, if my wife gets req GRE though I do not meet admission dead lines. I have couple of questions on this. 1) Can my wife start attending university on H4 Visa from Jan 2014.(As said earlier she will get her H4 visa in Dec 2013.). 2) Can we apply for COS while studying in the same semester if self.(H4 to F1) Kindly, advise me on the above issues. Thanks,

Just be careful.

I am getting her admission in the same university where I pursued my masters. My Advisor assured me of giving admission if she gets the req GRE score some where around December Mid or so.(Hopefully we will be safe zone) You said she can apply for COS in the same semester itself. So what is the good time for applying the same. I am planning to do it in the month of Feb or march 2014, so she can take the advantage of scholarships. Thanks, Santosh

Thanks, Santosh Good as long as they stick to their word. Better to stay for a semester and then initiate transfer process. Though I believe no such rule exists.
t75 Posted October 21, 2013 Report Posted October 21, 2013 YOU cannot get her admission to any university. Her admission will be based on her qualifications and not your degree from there. Your adviser has little to do with the admissions process if student selection is done honestly. You statement indicates that your alma mater is suspect. Are you planning to do her work for her too? You need to let her take charge of her education. If she is unable to do so, she is unqualified to study in the US.

Its just that I did my RA under the same professor who is now advisor(Hope you understand student-professor relationship in USA). It was easy for her to buy some more time to write GRE. she might not get a chance to submit her GRE in time but all other docs have been provided before deadline. I am not sure whats is so suspectable in this. And all the above steps were done by her as I am in USA and I dont think guiding some one through the process will really make them unqualified. Thanks.
JoeF Posted October 22, 2013 Report Posted October 22, 2013 A professor of course has some input into who gets accepted into graduate school, in particular if the student will do research in the professor's research group. It is by no means guaranteed, though, so, your statements of "I am getting her admission" and "My Advisor assured me of giving admission" are somewhat misleading.
