H1B - Married Name on I797; Maiden Name on Passport and I94

Hello Friends -

I am going to India in November this year to get my H1B Visa stamped.

I came to US on an H4 Dependent Visa and later got a job, applied and was approved for an H1B Visa.

The I797, Drivers License, SSN all show my married name (last name), whereas my Passport and I94 have my maiden name on them.

Will this cause any issues in the stamping/POE immigration check processes?

Should I change my last name in my passport to reflect my married name, before I leave the country?

Please advise.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

How did you manage to have a different last name when you applied for driver's license, SSN and I797 while you maiden name in passport is different?

You need to get a new passport with changed last name either from an Indian consulate in US or passport office in India. Choice is yours.

That's a good question. I'm interested to know this too.

I am also interested to know how desiamigo got different last name when desiamigo applied for driver's license, SSN, and I797. They just go by your passport and all those last names must match. In your case get new passport with correct last name so that all the documents match

yeah this is strangest thing... It is not possible to have different name on passport and I797 (H1B) & SSN card.

I presume you applied for Driver's license on H4 holding your passport with maiden name.

But how you applied for H1B.... Does USCIS ask you on what name your I797 will be issued? This is one of the rarest I have heard...

Get it changed in all docs.. All docs means passport, paystubs, offer letter, SSN Card... everything should match. If you really want to go for stamping.

Good Luck.

Sorry for not responding as I had lost track of this message. Hope this helps someone else.

My company, which is a public company by the way :), went through their law firm, to get my H1B approved in my married name. Had turned in my marriage certificate along with the Old Passport, which had my maiden name in it.

We had submitted all documents, and got a new passport now, with my married name on it now.

Hope this helps.
