Sri2102 Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 Hello, I am here to gather all possible answers regarding a question, that could put in trouble during my H1B Visa stamping interview. I graduated my Masters from Mechanical Engineering and I am working in SAP. From most of the Visa interview questions, I came to know, asking your degree in Masters is a very common question. So, when I tell the VO that I graduated in mechanical but, working in IT, naturally, I am guessing that he/she would ask me why I am working in IT then? Has any of you faced this situation? Can anyone tell me what could be the best answer for such question? I greatly appreciate your help. Thank you.

Sri2102 Posted September 10, 2013 Author Report Posted September 10, 2013 Is your grad degree related to the current job position Well, I am in engineering field. But the specialization differs. I am into Mechanical engineering education wise but, work in software field.

rahul412 Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 Has any of you faced this situation? Can anyone tell me what could be the best answer for such question? Their is no best answer here. Just explain vo how you are eligible for that job.
jairichi Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 Their is no best answer here. Just explain vo how you are eligible for that job. @ rahul412: If OP has an undergrad degree related to his current job will it not be sufficient enough?
Goluram Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 Get the education evaluation done in the US, I am sure you must have done some computer related courses in either your Bachelors or Masters so, take those courses as a reference while describing it to the VO.
rahul412 Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 @ rahul412: If OP has an undergrad degree related to his current job will it not be sufficient enough? That should be sufficient.
JoeF Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 @ rahul412: If OP has an undergrad degree related to his current job will it not be sufficient enough? Yes, that would be ok. For an H1 in the Masters quota, the Masters degree doesn't have to be in the field of the undergrad degree or even in the field of the work. The Masters degree just has to come from an accredited, public or non-profit private university in the US.

Sri2102 Posted October 23, 2013 Author Report Posted October 23, 2013 Hi - Did you attend interview already , can you share your experience as i am also planning to attend in November and in same situation Appreciate your help ! Hi, I attended my visa interview today @ Vancouver. Luckily, by God's grace, I did not face such question. The VO asked me in which field did I do my Masters but, never bothered to ask why I was working in a different field.

Vigneshwar Posted July 28, 2014 Report Posted July 28, 2014 @Sri2012: I am facing a similar situation. I am planning to go for my H1B stamping this year. I did my BE and MS in Mechanical Engg and I am currently working in an IT job. I have C programming course and lab in Bachelors and haven't done any IT related courses in Masters though I have done a couple of courses where I used MATLAB for programming. I understand that you would have formulated an answer while you were going to stamping if VO asks the following kind of questions: How can you justify your change of background (i.e., Mechanical in Masters to IT job)? Why did you change your background? How is your Masters degree related to your current job? Can you please share your answers which you would have probably thought of before your interview? I have been racking my brains out on this for a while. I would really appreciate your help. Sincerely, Vigneshwar
rahul412 Posted July 28, 2014 Report Posted July 28, 2014 How can you justify your change of background (i.e., Mechanical in Masters to IT job)? Why did you change your background? How is your Masters degree related to your current job? You need to tell the truth. No one knows how much knowledge you have in IT.
