I am on Opt ext till may 10th 2014 , when do i need to apply for H1 and can i start working once i apply or do i need to wait till october ( till my h1 card arrive) . can any one suggest me when to apply and any ground work i need to do before applying ,

You don't apply for an H1.

Your employer would file an H1 application. That can be done the earliest on April 1. And it should be done at that date, because it is likely that, like this year, the H1 quota fills in the first week.

April 1st an employer needs to file an H1B application. You will be allowed to work from Oct 1st. You need to also apply for cap gap to be in status in US from May 10th 2014 till Oct 1st 2014

You don't file for H1, your employer doesn't and their is nothing called H1 card. You will received H1 approval( I797). And ask your employer when he is planning to file your H1.

Sorry it's not 'employer doesn't' its 'employer does'. And also make sure that you do what @jairichi said.

If my employer applys for H1B visa  in April can I work if i have CAP_GAP from my university , and can my employer run pay check on my name. 
What is the worst case scenario that can happen in my case. And how soon can i apply for CAP-Gap  and what is the starting step for this process. 
As my employer is a newbie in this business , I can shift from him as i am in a long-term project .

Talk with the DSO at your university about cap-gap.

You would just continue to work and get paid as on normal OPT.
