Hi,

My spouse got admission to university for MS program. The course selected does not require GRE ,and TOEFL is waived off as medium of insturction is english.

1) i'm in process of applying change of status for her from H4 to F1, does she need to submit GRE and TOEFL scores for change of status ?

2)If planning to get F1 visa stamped in india, then GRE and TOEFL scores are still needed ,even though the course does not require GRE and university waived TOEFL scores?

Appreciate your help on this .

This was the similar case that happened to one of my friend. she changed her status from H4 to f1 without Gre and toefl went to home country for F1 stamping after completing two semesters in the school. she was questioned in the embassy and had to get back with H4 status. so please score for GRE even if its not necessary for school but its a requirement for F1 stamping incase you have to leave for home country.

Pretty much all real universities require GRE and TOEFL for foreign students.

The only exception I know is MIT: they don't require the GRE in their CS program, but they have their own, much harder test.

Stay away from an institution (other than MIT level) that doesn't require a GRE.

The TOFEL exam test score is for university international student admission and the GRE score is for university graduate school admission. Neither of these exams apply to a F-1 visa or the USCIS. If it is okay to be admitted to university and study on a H-4 visa, then what is the difference with a F-1 visa -- none with respect to the GRE and TOFEL exam.

It is more likely that an university that does not require a GRE or equivalent (in particular) or a TOFEL exam or equivalent waiver for admission to graduate school is the real issue. Virtually all reputable, accredited universities require these exams, equivalents, or specific waivers for admission to graduate school. The universities that do not have these requirements for admission tend to be toward the more questionable end of the spectrum.

The university is ready to give a letter stating that GRE score is not needed for the program, also she took a TOEFL like exam in English department of university, they are also ready to give letter on that. Will that work to convince visa officer ?

No. That's a shady university.

Stay away from them.
