dbr29 Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 I have a question regarding OPT. I did my MBA and applied for OPT. Got my OPT from Feb 22, 2011 to Feb 06, 2012. I started working from April 2011, I couldn't apply for H1B visa during the year 2011 and decided to pursue my 2nd Masters in Computer & Information Science. I started pursuing MS program from Jan 2012 and will be graduating in May 2013. Masters in Computer & Information Science program offers 27 months OPT, Hence under STEAM Extension program can I get OPT again? What are the chances if I apply for OPT now? Thank You.

What are the chances if I apply for OPT now? Ask your school DSO. Usually, OPT is not allowed for second master's degree.

STEM means Science, Technology, Engineering, Math. No A in there. Once you have used OPT, you can only get OPT again for a higher degree.
catx Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 You can only get OPT employment authorization once per degree level. Accordingly, you will not be able get OPT employment authorization from your (2nd) MS in Computer & Information Science. Also, as I understand it the (17 month) OPT STEM extension is only available directly following the initial (12 month) OPT, and thus would not be available on a 2nd Masters degree. OPT employment authorization is a case of use it (right away) or loose it once per degree level (i.e. once for Bachelors, once for Masters, and once for Ph.D.).
