vmsk0716
Hello all, I have my Conditional Green Card and need to remove the "work authorization needed" from my Social Security Card. -Is this possible on a conditional green card or do I need my 10 yr green card for that? -What documents do I need to carry with me to the Social Security office? -Should I fill any application prior to visiting the office? Thanks in advance for your help. Link to comment
JoeF
The Conditional GC is fine for that. You just file for a new SSN (I think it is form SS-5) with the GC. They make a copy of the GC. Link to comment
vmsk0716
Thanks Joe. Will I retain my current SS # or be given a new one? Thanks. Link to comment
catx
Your social security number (SSN) is issued to you for life, and does not change when there are changes in your status. The only change is any conditions associated with the SSN, e.g. "work authorization needed". When you file for a new social security card you will receive one with the same number without the noted condition. For example, I got my SSN when I was living in the U.S. with my parents (my father was a university professor), and as we were permanent residents there were no conditions on the social security card. When I came back to the U.S. on my own many years later on a H-1B visa I got a new social security card with the same number and the "work authorization needed" condition. Link to comment
JoeF
Thanks Joe. Will I retain my current SS # or be given a new one? Thanks. You keep the same number. It is yours for life. You will just get a new card without the restrictions. Link to comment
