Apply H1 while H4 expiring in May

Hi,

I am staying in US on H4 visa, which is going to expire in may 2013, I am planning to apply for H1B for this year (April 2013). My spouse is planning to file for extension of her H1B visa. If I apply for new H1B quota, what will be the situation.

1) Can I apply for H4 extension while my H1B is in progress?

2) If I am not applying for H4 visa extension, if my H1B approval got delayed. Can I stay back in US until I get my H1B Status or Do I need to move back to india?

2)If my H1B approval getting delayed, can I apply H4 extension so that I no need to travel back to india till my H1B get approved.

Please suggest me possible solutions :)
