It is very simple. I also have MS in Mechanical Engineering and working in IT field. However, I had an opportunity to learn programming languages like Basic, C and C++ in my BE. Also in my MS I was more towards programming in MATLAB, CAD and FEA. If that is your case, you can say something like this.

Sir/Madam, I had any opportunity to learn many great programming languages like Basic, C and C++ in my Bachelor of Engineering. From that day, I have decided that if there is something where I want to make my career it will be programming. Soon after graduating I started working as Junior Software Developer at XYZ company in my hometown. After few years of experience I have decided to explore the field of Computer Aided Design and Finite Element Analysis as that was also one of my interests. In my MS also I was more towards programming in MATLAB, CAD and FEA which also required great amount of analytic skills. In future, I want to dive into the field of Mechanical softwares where I can apply my professional experience of programming with my theoretical knowledge of mechanical. Furthermore, in current technological era any engineering field is not pure any more. They somehow somewhere overlap each others. And Mechanical Engineering is one of them. As BE and MS in Mechanical Engineering provided me a foundation for programming with more than enough analytic skills required to perform a job as a software developer I am working in IT field.

Of course, that would only work if it is actually true.

Just working somewhere in the IT field wouldn't cut it. If the OP works in a specific area that has to do with ME, like CAD stuff, then it would be possible to justify it based on that.

@JoeF - If they have to get a job on what they study then no one will ever get a job (Said in a funny way)

You may not like it, but the law clearly says that for an H1, the person has to have a degree in the field of the job.

You can't get a job in IT with an ME degree unless your job is closely related to ME stuff, e.g., for CAD things.

With an ME degree you can not get an H1 doing web design, for example.

@JoeF if you are an MS student in US which is Master of Science in Engineering that should be good enough for visa issuance. However in certain cases like if you are Ms HealthCare,Ms Chemistry,Biotech and still working in IT it is the case where it would be to tough to prove the facts and while applying for H1B to uscis itself cant be proved

If other field of engineering cant justify H1B then I dont think atleast 60% of the H1B holder applying from MNC'S in India cant be eligible

The OP has a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

That has nothing to do with IT, unless the IT-related job has to do with ME stuff, e.g., CAD.

@F1_H1_GC:

I am facing a similar situation. I am planning to go for my H1B

stamping this year. I did my BE and MS in Mechanical Engg and I am
currently working in an IT job. I have C programming course and lab in
Bachelors and haven't done any IT related courses in Masters though I
have done a couple of courses where I used MATLAB for programming.

I understand that you would have formulated an answer while you
were going to stamping if VO asks the following kind of questions:

How can you justify your change of background (i.e., Mechanical in
Masters to IT job)?

Why did you change your background?

How is your Masters degree related to your current job?

Can you please share your answers which you would have probably
thought of before your interview?

I have been racking my brains out on this for a while. I would really
appreciate your help.

Sincerely,

Vigneshwar
