Total period used on H1?

Hello All

My question is about the total period used on my H1. My initial H1 was valid from October 2008 till September 2011. During this period of H1, I was in India for 6 months. I worked from home for 4 months and I got paid for 4 months.

1) Is it true, to calculate the period used on H1 based on I 94 arrival and departure dates rather than H1 approval dates?

2) Will these 6 months be removed from my total H1 period since I am out of US or only the 2 months which I did not work or get paid?
