Immigrant USA
My mother-in-law came to the US without me and my husband having any idea about it, and she would not leave. I was called names and had to leave my house and stay with friends due to this mental, verbal, and emotional abuse. This abuse has been a pattern of behaviour not only towards me but also towards my husband. She is also known to have verbally and physically abused her sister-in-law in the past. In one of the instances when she was here, there was an incident where in a fit of anger she clenched a cup hard when talking to me and I felt like she was about to throw it at me. While here, she also threw clothes around in my closet and went through my medical files. She has also been pestering my parents in India to return the wedding jewellery. Both my husband and I are on our H1B visa and our I140 has been filed. What are our legal rights? Will it affect my husband's green card application if we file a restraining order against her or go to the police, as she is his mother? Is there something the embassy can do in this case?
