H1B completed 5 yrs

Hi 

I stayed in US from 2014 May till 2019 May i e for 5 yrs.I wanted to come back , when I apply for extension will it be only for 1 yr (will complete 6 yrs) or the duration will be reset, as I stayed out of country for 2 yrs.

You have the choice to get a cap-exempt extension for 1 year or get a new H1 in the quota which would give you a new 6 years.

If you apply for H1b extension, the duration will be for one year.  It will reset if you get into lottery again.  

It is advisable if your current employer can start your PERM process immediately and get you an I140 so you can keep extending your current H1b beyond 6 years.

I feel H1B extension will be 1 year. If you want reset I guess you need to go through lottery...

You did not specify which visa in question, if it's H1b- most probably it will be 1 year. It only resets after 6 year for new petition, not existing.

In order to reset the duration, you needed to stay out for one year and apply for the H1 lottery and get through. If you do not go through the cap, you can only reclaim the remaining one year.
