H1B approved but want to stay back on valid H4 visa

I am in US and have H4 visa stamped in my passport and valid until June 2012. If I apply for H1B and it gets approved with start date from October 1st 2011, Can i decide to stay on H4 visa itself without moving to H1B status??

Generally, when one status changes from H4 to H1b, the Beneficiary must begin work when the H1b petition validity period begins.
