Can someone file for this on their own or need attorney for it. Please let me know how much time it takes to complete the change of status request. 2) After filing for change of status do i need to wait for some approval or can file for change of status back to H1 along with extension while i am waiting for H1 to H4 change of status request.

Time to apply - we do not know since it depends on you and you must give sometime for this important step in your life. Time for H4 approval - I guess few cases are taking 6+ months. H1B to H4 - this is change of status. Please use help of immigration lawyer. I do not have any referral. 2) Not sure. Take advice of lawyer.
