Two I797 with same employer

Hi -

I am working with a company WXY. They processed my H1B with validity upto 17th June 2018. Later they filed an amendment on top of that, which has a validity upto 31st Dec 2017. I have both the I797s with me. My VISA was stamped with 17th June 2018, as well as my I94 is valid upto 17th June 2018.

Now, while I am asking them to file extension for the 17th June 2018 Visa, they are asking me to exit as my recent I797 has expired even though my old I797 is still valid. Can I still continue to be in US (I94 and old I797 are valid), or should I exit the country as my latest I797 has expired.
