nroy_1
We were naturalized a few months ago and received out naturalization certificate and passport. My son (born in India) became a naturalized citizen as part of this process. We got his American passport. We didn't feel a need to get a naturalization certificate for him as the passport should be sufficient documentation/proof of citizenship status for whatever is needed in his future. However I hear many parents going for the naturalization certificate as well. I am wondering whether there is any merit in also having the naturalization certificate. Are there any solid reasons for a naturalization certificate? Link to comment
pontevecchio
You can apply for a certificate of Citizenship for your son if you want. I see no reason except maybe framing it and hanging it in the child's bedroom as a momento. I suspect he will not get a Naturalization certificate . As per a supreme court decision, an US Passport is unequivocal proof of US Citizenship. Link to comment
JoeF
An unexpired passport is the only proof of citizenship. The N-600 is just a waste of money. Link to comment
Shurap1
Just wondering what happens when he turns 18 and in the unlikely event he loses his passport? How do he get that back? What documents would need to be produced then? Would he not need naturalization certificate for that purpose? Link to comment
pontevecchio
They could get a Passport card for the child in addition to the passport. They could keep copies of the passport safe. This will eliminate issues in losing passports. Link to comment
nroy_1
Thanks for confirming my believe that the naturalization certificate will be just a redundancy and probably a waste of money. Link to comment
