Work on EAD while H1 to H4 COS is pending?

Hi,
My wife and I were both on individual H1Bs. In September 2017, I was laid off. I filed for H1B to H4 Change of Status as a dependent of my wife.

My wife's employer filed for her green card (I-140 got approved in October 2017 and EAD/AP/I-485 were filed for both of us (myself as a dependent) in May 2017. We are currently waiting for the EAD cards). 

My Question -
Since my H1B to H4 Change of Status application is Pending (which I believe will take couple of months assuming there is no premium processing for H1B to H4 change of status), Can I work for any employer when I receive my EAD card before my H4 application is approved?
