Travelling to India with 2 months of Passport Validity in hand

I am on H1B (valid for more than 10 months). Due to some personal reasons, I want to go back to India permanently (one way travel from US to India). My passport is only valid for 3 more months. Will I be able to travel on my passport (considering passport validity to be more than 2 months from the date of travel).

Checked with Etihad airways, they replied if there's a stop over in Abu dhabi then I will require passport valid for more than 6 months. Does this mandate differ for different airlines ? United Airlines said no such problem as long as your passport is valid, you are good to travel back to your home country.
