Travelling to India during H1B extension in process

My H1B expired on 03SEP17. My employer filed for an extension (on AUG17), but I still haven't got the approval yet. I am 'hoping' that I will get the approval soon (but 'hope' is just overrated word now). I'm planning to go to India on 15Dec17 and come back on 30Dec17. My questions:

1. If I get the approval asap - Will it be safe to travel to India considering I get the stamping done before I return to U.S.? 

2. Stamping - This is my first stamping and I will have to go to Chennai consulate, can anyone provide their experience/ tips on this?

3. If I don't get the approval - How risky is it to travel to India without the approval confirmation? Any experiences on this?

Firstly its highly impossible to get an appointment during that time that too with in this short range considering Holiday Season.

1. Yes should not be a problem

2.If you don't get approval before traveling, you will get stuck in India until you get approval and subsequent stamping.

Best bet is upgrade immediately to Premium and you can book your visa appointment while in US itself.
