H1B approved and waiting for J-1 waiver approval

Hey,

This is with regards to transferring my status from F1 OPT STEM to H1B visa.

My H1B visa got approved but I am still waiting for my J-1 waiver approval and once it comes through, I will get my visa stamped so that I can transfer to H1B. This brings me to my question, do I actually have to work for the company on H1B visa in USA for it to become active. I am thinking of moving back to India after making sure that I get my H1B visa stamped in the US consulate in India so that if I decide to come back to USA later, I can come back on H1B without going through the lottery. Will not working for the company on H1B visa void my H1B visa given that I have already got it stamped but never worked on H1B visa in USA?
