h1b employee taking on additional responsibilities for career development

I am a H1b employee with an approved I-140. My question is related to career development. there is an option for me to fill a temporary role in addition to maintaining/fulfilling my current role. This believe this will help  with my career development.  What should my employer do? 

- Should we re-apply for H1b for the new role? Is this within the law to just pursue the added responsibility without triggering another visa? 

What documentation is required to be maintained by my employer?

HOw does this affect my I-140?
