H1b Extension and Travel to outside USA

My H1B visa expiry , I-797  and I-94 expiry date is May 5th 2017

I am planning to apply for extension on Jan 2017. ( my first extension based on I-140)

While H1B extension application in progress, is it possible to travel to India on March 2017 middle coming back on April first week,
