I am currently working on F1 OPT status which is valid until July 2017. My current employer is not willing to apply for H1b. I am eligible to convert to H4 EAD.

  1. Can I apply for H4 and H4 EAD together or do I need to apply separately?
  2. If applying separately do I lose my F1 OPT EAD work status which is valid until July 2017? Can I continue to work until July before I convert to H4 EAD status?

You can apply both at same time.

When you apply, you need to put a start date on the application. This can be a future date. However, from that date your F1 status will be                  invalid and you cannot work on OPT EAD.

This is as per my knowledge since i have applied for my wife. May be experts or attorney might give you more information.

You can file both H4 and the EAD at the same time, but the EAD will not be processed until the H4 is approved. That means you have to stop working when the H4 is approved and can only start again when the EAD is approved. The F1 EAD becomes invalid when the H4 is approved. So, there will be a gap during which you can't work.
