EAD about to expire switch back to H1B

Hi,

I recently noticed that my EAD is set to expire in December 2016, and I don't think the USCIS will approve my EAD, in time, if I apply today. After reading various blogs, I have come to understand that I would have to take a time-off from work, but can remain in the country.

In the meantime, I have H1B documents that are set to expires in 2018. This H1B is not stamped on my passport, but I have the approval notice.

My question is: Can I switch back to my H1B without exiting the country and report the change of status via my I-9 and continue to work for my employer?
