H1-B validity duration after switching to new employer

Hello all

I have an approved I140 and H1-B valid until may 2019.  My H1-B got effective on May 2016.   I am planning to switch employer around Jan 2017 and my H1 validitiy by that time would be close to 2 years 5 months.  

Question is, if my H1 transfer gets approved with new employer, will i be issued with 3 years starting January 2017 or would it be only the remaining 2 years 5 months as how it was originally ?
