Travel before 1 mnth of opt expiration

I need to travel to India in Dec 1st week and will come back in Last week. But my initial OPT is expiring in mid of February 2017, so I have apply for the extension between 20th Oct 2016 and 13 Feb 2017. My questions are

1. When to apply for the extension, before going to India or after returning to US?

2. If I apply after returning to US, at the port of entry , is there any problem because there is only 45 days left for the expiration of my OPT.

3.If I apply before leaving to India, is there any delay or anything for my extension application, because I left USA.

Please help me with these

I would urge you to run these questions by your DSO and go by what is suggested.

1) Always better to apply after coming back to avoid any confusion.

2) Should not have any issues as long as you have job, pay stubs etc.

3) Your I-94 will change while returning back. That might cause a confusion in your case. Better keep all docs ready and post them with updated I-94 as soon as you return from India.
